Obituary

CAROL JUNE KROHMER , (nee Scherler), age 90, went to the arms of Jesus with her family by her side on December 26, 2025.  Beloved mother of James, Thomas, Daniel (Colleen), and Carolyn Mastropieri (Paul); cherished grandmother of Kenneth (Kateryna), Patrick, Grant, Brian, and Adam (Adeline); loving great-grandmother of Artyom; beloved daughter of Frank and Mary Scherler (both deceased); former wife of the late Russell; dearest niece of Alma (Jerry) (both deceased) and cousin of Bobby and Karen (Jim) (all deceased); beloved aunt of Laurel and Travis and their children Mallory, Elise, and Abigail; dear sister of many foster siblings and Jewell Pozek, Rose Vidugiris, Mae Ferris, Helen Kochmit, and George Millburn (all deceased); cousin to many from 'out the farm'.  In addition to her lifelong friendships, Junie made many new friends while living at Anna Maria of Aurora over the last three years.  She enjoyed being an organist for Zion Lutheran Church for many years and a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  Family suggests contributions to Anna Maria of Aurora Activities Department , Meals on Wheels , or Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care, 3743 Boettler Oaks Drive, Suite E, Uniontown, OH 44685.

June was born on December 9, 1935, in Bedford, Ohio and adopted as a toddler by Mary and Frank Scherler. She was lovingly raised near Garfield Park in Garfield Heights, Ohio, next door to her Aunt and fun cousins Bobby and Karen. Growing up with German-Czech traditions, June played with her foster siblings and attended Lutheran Church Services on Cable Street every Sunday with her father. June found these services fascinating as they were conducted all in German. Sundays with family included dinner, pinochle, and listening to polka music.

June learned to bake and cook ethnic dishes with her mother. She enjoyed summers "out the farm" on her mother and aunt's 48 acre property and with her loving aunts, uncles, and fun cousins Joey, Shirley and Sharon who lived next door on their thriving dairy farm. June was very close to her maternal grandmother. Together, they spent many days reading the Bible. June often shared with her own children, the great loss she felt when her Grandmother passed away on the farm when she was nine years old. Growing up, June enjoyed swimming and listening to Indians baseball games on the radio with her father. A notable memory was attending the World Series in 1948 and watching the Indians win! Music was also an important part of June's life. She learned to play the piano and the accordion at an early age!

In high school, June twirled the baton like a pro and was a talented majorette in the Garfield Heights Marching Band. She earned excellent grades and excelled in math. Following graduation, June attended Bowling Green State University to begin studying Physical Therapy, eventually earning an associates degree from Cuyahoga Community College.  After one year at BGSU, she married Russell Krohmer, her high school sweetheart. The couple soon welcomed their first born, James. A short time later they moved to Detroit where they welcomed their second son, Thomas.

Cleveland called the couple home and they settled near their parents in Garfield Heights.  In 1961and 1964, June and Russell welcomed two more children (Daniel and Carolyn, respectively). It was during this time that June and Russell worked hard together to launch their company, A Better Heating and Air Conditioning. The business flourished and the couple enjoyed many good years together.  CB Radios were popular then, and their "handles" were "Romeo and Juliette".  New friends were made on the radio and the Stevenson family quickly became family.
The Krohmer's were members of St. John Lutheran Church and June's four children attended school there. Days were full and always led by the teachings of Jesus as June shared bible stories and lessons with her four children at bedtime.  For over sixty years, June readily cared for many children in her home on Penfield Avenue, including Timmy, Tammy, and Tina, and her friend Gabrielle's boys Alex, Lucas and Nicholas, all of whom she loved dearly.

June served as a room mother and a Cub Scout Den leader. She most enjoyed being outside, attending festivals and parades, and vacationing in The Great Smokey Mountains. June considered her children's friends her own and many called her "Mom". True to her giving nature, June also felt moved to advocate for the homeless and support those in need or who were experiencing loss. She made sure all those who entered her home were welcomed with a warm hug and given a seat at the family table.

Beginning in 1974, following her divorce from Russell, June made new friends in a variety of clubs. She learned to sail on Lake Erie and found strength through the friendships she made when belonging to Parents Without Partners. She and her close friend Laura enjoyed many cups of tea together and leaned on one another while raising their children. June attended dances and other club events with her special guy, Bernie.
As a single mother raising four children, June was known to be hard working and fiercely independent. She worked at Diamond Shamrock, the Cleveland Clinic, and the United States Postal Service for 20 years, where she met her good friend Mary. The two had many good times together and kept in touch over the years. Post retirement, June helped care for her grandsons part time and worked for Marcs for nearly 15 years.
Meaningful outreach was always important to June. Through the Lutheran Aide Society, she regularly sponsored orphaned children living overseas. June provided important mission work in Haiti in the late 90's. She helped build a Christian school, served as a Sunday School teacher to orphaned babies and children, and shared her love of Jesus with them.

Locally, June spent decades canvassing and marching for The American Cancer Society and The March of Dimes. She sat on phone banks for WVIZ Public television. In 2002 June earned her foster parenting license and went on to support several children in her home through Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services. She was a dedicated volunteer for The United Way Adult Guardianship Program (grandparents raising their grandchildren).  In fact, June was formally recognized and celebrated by Cuyahoga County Commissioners for her 15 years as a volunteer with the Adult Guardianship services Program in 2006 and 2007!

June also remained active in the Garfield Heights Civic Center and was a member of the Garfield Heights Home Days Committee as well as her high school reunion committee. In 2008, the Garfield Heights Senior Center recognized June for "Always Giving With Heart". After being a "Jumper" for Meals on Wheels with her friend Judy, June concluded her volunteer time in 2019.

With faith at the center of her life and through consistent lessons given by her talented friend Gabrielle, June became an accomplished organist for Zion Lutheran Church. Her family has fond memories of June accompanying Lois when she sang "Oh Holy Night" and ending each Christmas Eve services with "Go Tell it on the Mountain". June valued the company of her friends who belonged to Mary Martha. She looked forward to weekly Bible study at Zion Lutheran Church as a chance to grow in faith and fellowship.

While her grandchildren remember June as kind and generous, they also recognized and appreciated her fun side during birthday parties, holidays, and graduations.  She never missed a grandson's school performance.  June valued time spent laughing and reminiscing with her close family Aunt Alma, Karen, Jim, Lori, and Travis, and their children Mallory, Elise and Abigail. June enjoyed playing board games, puzzles, and she taught her grandchildren to bake cookies. June often jumped on the bus with her eldest grandson to sight see around downtown Cleveland. She was always available to pick the boys up after preschool at St. Johns, make them lunch, and go on walks with them.

June's love of animals meant she never hesitated to take in a stray cat or dog (or a wild bunny, snake, or turtle). While she enjoyed carrying for a variety of living creatures both large and small, it was Suzie, her black lab who forever held a special place in June's heart.

Over the years, June enjoyed skiing, sailing, dancing, reading mysteries, listening to Billy Graham, playing board games, watching baseball and football games, completing crossword puzzles and Sudoku, hosting parties, and cooking delicious brunches and dinners for her family and friends. Her stand out dishes included pork dumplings and sauerkraut, seven layer salad, and standing rib roast with Yorkshire pudding.
During her health challenges, June was blessed with an active life at Anna Maria of Aurora. She was ecstatic to reunite (post pandemic) with her long time friends Pastor John and his wife Elaine from Zion Lutheran Church. They joyfully worshiped together nearly every Tuesday morning for the next three years.

June's family will always think kindly on seeing Mom loved and making many new friendships through the multitude of structured activities, outings, and pet therapy offered at Anna Maria. June's family would like to thank the staff at Anna Maria of Aurora for their dedicated and loving medical care. They would also like to thank the nurses and caregivers at The Gardens of the Western Reserve and Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care for their ongoing support. Special gratitude is sent to Chaplain Pat, for her spiritual support during the final hours of June's journey home to be with her Heavenly Father.

Family and friends are asked to meet SATURDAY, JANUARY 24 , at St. John Lutheran Church, corner of Turney and Granger Rds., for a MEMORIAL GATHERING 10-11 AM, followed by services at 11:00 AM.  Interment St. John Lutheran Cemetery.
