GEORGE "CHARLLEY" KORTYNA JR., age 94, left his earthly home for his heavenly rewards on October 29, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Beloved husband for 29 years of Mary (nee Serafin, formerly Pintner); loving father of Alice Kemper (Allen-deceased), Dr. George III (Janice-deceased), Blase (deceased), Gerard (Lillian-deceased), and Ann Hirsel (Edward); cherished grandfather of Jill Smith (Israel), Eric A. Kemper, Laura McGuire (Kurt), Suzanne Furrie (Joshua) , Gerard Kortyna Jr., and Victoria Hirsel and great-grandfather of Joseph and Kennedy Furrie; dear brother of Albert, Robert, Ralph (deceased), Joseph (deceased), and Andrew.
He was the eldest of six sons born to George Sr. and Bertha (nee Danek) in Cherry Valley, PA.
He was a 1945 graduate of Union High School in Burgettsown, PA. At the age of 17 enlisted in the Navy on June 25, 1945, to do his part in WWII. He became a Navy Corpsmen and served on the Hospital Ship U.S.S. Repose.
After his discharge on November 4, 1948, through the Serviceman's Readjustment Act, he learned masonry and meat cutting.
He worked in food sales for several companies including Nestle's, Sugardale, and Heinz.
He then began working at the Twinsburg, OH Chrysler Stamping Plant where he eventually became the oldest tool & die apprentice in the history of the company. He retired a Journeyman Die Maker on May 31, 1990.
George was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary daily. He was both an Usher and member of The Holy Name Society at Church of the Assumption in Broadview Heights, OH.
He was a Boy Scout leader for his eldest son George III.
George's talents were many. Atop the list was his expertise at the violin. He gave lessons to school children as well as to many family members. Listening to his clever rendition of Happy Birthday at parties was always a delight.
He had a passion for sports of which baseball was his favorite. He played in the Huff-N-Puffers slow pitch softball league in Parma, OH where he was named 1997 Most Valuable Player, not only because of his outstanding hitting ability, but also because of his capacity to vacuum up balls hit to his third base position.
He had a barber chair in his basement where he gave free haircuts to friends and family alike.
He maintained a large garden and several fruit trees in his backyard.
When it came to handyman work, he could do anything from building a two-car garage to a full bathroom in a basement.
He donated blood every 8 weeks and had too many 5-gallon donor pins to count.
He drove the local senior's bus and was named Broadview Heights Volunteer of the Year.
George never met a glass of buttermilk he didn't like.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Church of the Assumption, 9183 Broadview Rd., Broadview Heights, on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, for a VISITATION 11:00 - 12:00 Noon followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon. Interment All Saints Cemetery.
GEORGE AND HIS FAMILY HAVE REQUESTED NO FLOWERS PLEASE.
